{"id":24,"date":"2012-07-18T17:51:15","date_gmt":"2012-07-18T17:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/communications\/?page_id=24"},"modified":"2016-08-10T12:55:10","modified_gmt":"2016-08-10T16:55:10","slug":"dates-and-time","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/university-communications\/style-guide-logos\/dates-and-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Dates and Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Dates<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Dates in text\u2028<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do not use\u00a0<em>st, nd, rd<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>th\u00a0<\/em>following numerals in dates (i.e.,\u00a0<em>April 1<\/em>, not\u00a0<em>April 1<sup>st<\/sup><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Days of the week<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid abbreviation, except when needed in a tabular form.<\/li>\n<li>When you must abbreviate, use three letters with no periods (i.e., Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Months of the year<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not abbreviate.<\/li>\n<li>When a phrase lists only a month and a year, do not separate the year with commas (e.g.,\u00a0<em>March 1998 was a cold month.\u00a0 March 17 was a cold day of the month. March 5, 2009, is my wedding date.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Seasons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lowercase spring, summer, fall, winter, and derivatives such as springtime, unless part of a formal name (e.g.,\u00a0<em>The dance will occur in the spring, but Saint Peter&#8217;s Spring Fever is coming soon.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Decades<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decades are either spelled out and lowercased or expressed in numerals with no apostrophe between the year and the s (e.g.,<em>\u00a0the nineties, the 1990s<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>You can abbreviate the year by replacing the first two digits with an apostrophe (e.g.,\u00a0<em>the \u201990s<\/em>). \u00a0If a font naturally curves the apostrophe, it must open to the left.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Centuries<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spell out centuries (e.g.,\u00a0<em>the twenty-first\u00a0century<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Hyphenate when used as an adjective (e.g.,\u00a0<em>twenty-first-century literature<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Times<\/h3>\n<p>Minutes should always follow the hour, and time should always be written in the 11:00 a.m. format.<\/p>\n<p><strong>a.m., p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always lowercase and use periods.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid redundancies.\n<ul>\n<li>Never use\u00a0<em>12:00 a.m.<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>p.m.<\/em>\u00a0when using\u00a0<em>noon<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>midnight<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Do not combine\u00a0<em>a.m.<\/em>\u00a0with\u00a0<em>in the morning<\/em>, etc. (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Meet me at 2:00 p.m., not Meet me at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon<\/em>.).<\/li>\n<li>10 &#8211; 11:00 a.m. is preferred rather than 10:00 a.m. &#8211; 11:00 a.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Terminology<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Annual<\/strong><br \/>\nAvoid describing an event as\u00a0<em>annual<\/em>\u00a0until it has been held at least two successive years.\u00a0 You may note that sponsors plan to hold the event annually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biannual<\/strong><br \/>\nBiannual means twice a year or once every six months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biennial<\/strong><br \/>\nBiennial means every two years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bimonthly<\/strong><br \/>\nBimonthly means every other month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Semimonthly<\/strong><br \/>\nSemimonthly means twice a month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biweekly<\/strong><br \/>\nBiweekly means every other week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Semiweekly<\/strong><br \/>\nSemiweekly means twice a week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dates Dates in text\u2028 Do not use\u00a0st, nd, rd, or\u00a0th\u00a0following numerals in dates (i.e.,\u00a0April 1, not\u00a0April 1st).
