Academic degrees, personal titles, and class years<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Academic Degrees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div id="91a746f6d1" class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-third\"><em>Formal Use<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bachelor of Science<\/p>\n<p>Bachelor of Arts<\/p>\n<p>Master of Arts<\/p>\n<p>Doctor of Philosophy<\/div> <div id="91a746f6d1" class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-third\"><em>General Use<\/em><\/p>\n<p>bachelor&#8217;s degree<\/p>\n<p>bachelor&#8217;s degree<\/p>\n<p>master&#8217;s degree<\/p>\n<p>doctoral degree<\/div> <div id="91a746f6d1" class=\"ezcol ezcol-one-third ezcol-last\"><em>Abbreviated Use<\/em><\/p>\n<p>B.S.<\/p>\n<p>B.A.<\/p>\n<p>M.A.<\/p>\n<p>Ph.D.<\/div><div id="91a746f6d1" class=\"ezcol-divider\"><\/div><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Academic majors, unless a proper noun, should not capitalized (e.g.,\u00a0<em>John has a bachelor of economics degree, or John has a bachelor\u2019s degree in French literature<\/em>.).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>When used after a name, an academic abbreviation is set off by commas (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Mary Doe, Ph.D., spoke<\/em>.).<\/li>\n<li>The word \u201cdegree\u201d should not follow an abbreviation (e.g.,\u00a0<em>She has a B.A. in English literature, not She has a B.A. degree in English literature<\/em>.).<\/li>\n<li>The first time a name is mentioned in narrative text, use the suffix (e.g.,\u00a0<em>John Smith, Ph.D., spoke at the event<\/em>.) For subsequent referrals to the name, you need not repeat the suffix (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Dr. Smith spoke about religion in South America, or Smith was pleased to speak to so many of our students.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Avoid redundancies.<\/li>\n<li>Do not precede a name with a courtesy title for an academic degree and follow it with the abbreviation for the degree in the same reference (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Jane Doe, Ph.D., not Dr. Jane Doe, Ph.D.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Use abbreviations after full names, but refrain from using abbreviations after last names alone (e.g., J<em>ane Doe, Ph.D., not Doe, Ph.D.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>When listed, names should be in alpha order by last name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Titles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only capitalize formal titles when used directly before a name (e.g., <em>Vice President for Advancement and External Affairs, Leah Leto M.Ed. &#8217;05<\/em>).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">In general, do not capitalize titles that follow a name (e.g., <em>Leah Leto M.Ed. &#8217;05, vice president for advancement and external affairs, is in today<\/em>.).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Courtesy titles such as Miss, Mr., Mrs. or Ms. should not be used with the first and last names of the person.\u00a0 Use last name only unless otherwise indicated (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Mr. Smith, or Joe Smith, not Mr. Joe Smith<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Academic Titles<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Capitalize and spell out formal titles such as president, professor, dean, chairman, etc., when they precede a name (e.g.,<em>Professor Smith<\/em>).\u00a0 It is preferred that these titles appear in lowercase when the title follows a name or stands alone (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Bob Smith is a professor at Saint Peter\u2019s University.<\/em>).<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Try to avoid abbreviating the word \u201cProfessor.\u201d In case of space restrictions, use \u201cDr.\u201d in place of Professor.<\/li>\n<li>In general, lowercase modifiers (e.g.,\u00a0<em>We spoke with history professor Bob Smith about his work.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>In some cases, appointed academic titles may be capitalized following a name (e.g.,<em>\u00a0<\/em>if given a title by the Peabody Fund, a person could be called\u00a0<em>Bob Smith, Peabody Professor of Languages<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Do not hyphenate \u201cvice president.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>When referring to a retired male professor, use the word\u00a0<em>emeritus<\/em>\u00a0after the title (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Joe Smith, dean emeritus of the graduate school<\/em>, visited.).\n<ul>\n<li><em>Emerita <\/em>&#8211; singular female<\/li>\n<li><em>Emeriti<\/em> &#8211; plural male or mixed-gender professors<\/li>\n<li><em>Emeritae<\/em> &#8211; plural female<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Alumni<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\">Alumnus<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Alumnus<\/em> &#8211; singular male<\/li>\n<li><em>Alumni<\/em> &#8211; plural male<\/li>\n<li><em>Alumna<\/em> &#8211; singular female<\/li>\n<li><em>Alumnae &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>plural female<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Alumni names are expressed with an apostrophe and the last two digits of the graduation year (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Jane Doe \u201996<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Note the direction of the apostrophe.\n<ul>\n<li>Jane Doe \u201996 is correct; Jane Doe \u201896 is not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>When listing the recipients of honorary degrees, place a capital \u201cH\u201d between the recipient\u2019s last name and the year of reception (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Edward Jones H \u201904<\/em>).\u00a0 All references should specify that the degree was honorary.\u00a0 Do not use the name Dr. before the name of an individual whose only doctorate is honorary.<\/li>\n<li>When listing the recipients of honorary alumni awards, place a capital \u201cHA\u201d between the recipient\u2019s last name and the year of reception (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Sarah O\u2019Malley HA \u201976<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Alumni who are faculty, staff and administrators at Saint Peter\u2019s University should place their graduation years after their names on business cards, name tags and signature lines.<\/li>\n<li>For two-degree graduates, use comma\/space: <em>\u201cJane Doe \u201907, \u201909\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Departments of Study<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Capitalize the names of formal programs of study, but lowercase informal and generic references to programs and courses of study (e.g.,\u00a0<em>He was enrolled in the theology program<\/em>; or\u00a0<em>The lecture was presented by the Department of Theology<\/em>.).<\/li>\n<li>Capitalize official names of courses and lecture series, but do not use quotation marks. (e.g.,\u00a0<em>He is registered for Introduction to Sociology<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>Robert Smith gave a talk for the Guarini Lecture Series<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Designations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Commas are used to set off academic, professional and religious designations (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Robert G. Lahita, M.D.; Rev. Michael Braden, S.J.; Kristina Chew, Ph.D. etc.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Commas are not used to set off Jr., Sr., and I, II, and III after a name, because these are considered part of a person\u2019s name (e.g.,<em>Martin Luther King Jr., Michael J. Kabot II<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Religious designations\n<ul>\n<li>The first reference to a clergyman or clergywoman normally should include a capitalized title before the individual\u2019s name with the initials S.J. after it (e.g., <em>Rev. Rocco Danzi, S.J.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>When the designation \u201cS.J.\u201d is used, it should always be capitalized, have periods after each letter, and appear following the person\u2019s name set off by commas (e.g.,\u00a0<em>John Smith, S.J.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>On second reference, it is common to omit the first name (e.g.,\u00a0<em>Rev. John Smith, S.J.,<\/em>\u00a0followed by\u00a0<em>Fr.
