Political science major Blanca M. Hernandez \u201915 is interning at the United Nation\u2019s Department of Public Information (DPI). The DPI was established in 1946, by General Assembly resolution 13 (I), to promote global awareness and understanding of the work of the United Nations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat caught my attention about this position was that I would be exposed to a different world and introduced to many people,\u201d said Hernandez.<\/p>\n
According to its website, The Department of Public Information is dedicated to communicating the ideals and work of the United Nations to the world; to interacting and partnering with diverse audiences; and to building support for peace, development and human rights for all. The DPI utilizes radio, television, print, the Internet, video-conferencing and other media tools to accomplish this goal.<\/p>\n
Under the supervision of Janet C. Salazar, the permanent representative to the United Nations, Hernandez organizes networking events held by the DPI. She also networks with many nonprofit organizations and even has even met several ambassadors during her internship.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am glad that I have been able to grow a connection with Ms. Janet,\u201d said Hernandez. \u201cIt made me realize that I can achieve my goals if I just get myself out there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hernandez encourages other students to participate in internships as well, saying, \u201cI would recommend anyone to take the chance and apply to as many internships as they can to gain experience. Also, doors will be opened during the process.\u201d<\/p>\n
