As a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), Saint Peter\u2019s University takes this year\u2019s National Hispanic Heritage Month as a special opportunity to honor the richness and vibrancy of its community. From September 15 through October 15, the University will celebrate the contributions of Hispanic Americans and reflect on Saint Peter\u2019s ongoing dedication to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment. This year\u2019s theme, \u201cPioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,\u201d resonates with the University\u2019s mission to empower the next generation of leaders and innovators.<\/p>\n
Last year, Saint Peter\u2019s marked its 25th anniversary as a HSI, a significant milestone in the University\u2019s history. As a HSI, Saint Peter\u2019s serves a student body that is more than 25 percent Hispanic, a reflection of its ongoing commitment to supporting the fastest-growing demographic in higher education.<\/p>\n
Hubert Benitez, D.D.S., Ph.D., the first Hispanic president of Saint Peter\u2019s, expressed his pride in leading a University that has long embraced its Hispanic identity. \u201cAs we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are reminded that our students are poised to be the leaders and innovators of tomorrow,\u201d said Dr. Benitez. \u201cThis is a time to recognize the rich cultural diversity within our University and to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our Hispanic students, faculty and alumni.\u201d<\/p>\n
In line with its mission to support the success of Hispanic students, Saint Peter\u2019s University has formally affiliated with Excelencia<\/i> in Education<\/a>, the nation\u2019s leading organization dedicated to accelerating Latino student success in higher education. As part of this affiliation, President Benitez has joined the Presidents for Latino Student Success (P4LSS) national network, which consists of university leaders committed to fostering campus environments where Latino students, and all students, can thrive.<\/p>\n The University\u2019s commitment to its Hispanic community can be seen through the stories of its students, who have found a welcoming and supportive environment at Saint Peter\u2019s.<\/p>\n Katherine Pena Sanchez \u201925<\/p><\/div>\n Katherine Pena Sanchez \u201925, a biology major, shared how Saint Peter\u2019s helped her thrive both academically and personally. \u201cAt Saint Peter\u2019s, I\u2019ve found a community where I know I can always rely on others.
