However, unfortunately for some, the holidays can bring about a sense of loneliness and isolation. One incredibly vulnerable population are the senior citizens in nursing homes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Saint Peter\u2019s students are well-versed in living as \u201cpeople for and with others.\u201d This is a key value of a Jesuit education in which students are taught to embrace the importance of standing &nbsp; with the marginalized or those in need.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Saint Peter\u2019s community identified a need to support area senior citizens this holiday season and the students of the University quickly rose to the challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a id="bcbaa46508" href=\"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Group-Photo-F23-scaled.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11863\" src=\"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Group-Photo-F23-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Group-Photo-F23-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Group-Photo-F23-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Group-Photo-F23-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Group-Photo-F23-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Group-Photo-F23-90x120.jpg 90w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Group-Photo-F23-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a>Ignatian Values in Math Class&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Students in Mary Anne Gallagher-Landi\u2019s math class often discuss the Ignatian values and how they are relevant in the students\u2019 lives. Each student then writes a letter to a nursing home resident about their personal stories to offer hope and inspiration. In the past the letters were dropped off, but this year several of the students brought the letters in-person to Peace Care Saint Joseph\u2019s Nursing Home and led a holiday craft project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am always proud of my students, but I was incredibly proud to see the poise, grace and generosity of spirit our students exhibited at Saint Joseph&#8217;s,\u201d said Professor Gallagher-Landi. \u201cThey are beautiful examples of <i>men and women for and with others.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a id="bcbaa46508" href=\"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Mariam-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11862\" src=\"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Mariam-scaled-e1704227995938-1024x986.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Mariam-scaled-e1704227995938-1024x986.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Mariam-scaled-e1704227995938-300x289.jpg 300w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Mariam-scaled-e1704227995938-768x740.jpg 768w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Mariam-scaled-e1704227995938-1536x1479.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Mariam-scaled-e1704227995938-120x116.jpg 120w, https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Peace-Care-Mariam-scaled-e1704227995938.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a>According to one of the residents of the nursing home, the Saint Peter\u2019s students made the residents\u2019 day. &nbsp;\u201cFor me, personally, it brought back memories of my visits to nursing homes over the years! Now that I&#8217;m a resident in a nursing facility myself I&#8217;m doubly grateful for the time and effort put into the visits from Saint Peter\u2019s,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>According to Professor Gallagher-Landi, \u201cIt is important for my students to experience the Ignatian values in action in my course and writing letters for the Peace Care Saint Joseph nursing home is a way to do so, and to make a special connection with members of our Jersey City community &#8211; to be people for and with others. I spend time in class discussing Ignatian values with my students because it is an important part of their Jesuit education, with a focus on the whole person, not solely on academic growth. This semester we discussed being people for and with others, and self reflection &#8211; examining our lives and gaining insight about ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Glamour Gals and Guys<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Another campus program that gives back to seniors in the community is Glamour Gals and Guys. The program was established in 2015 by the Office of Campus Ministry at Saint Peter\u2019s University and it is made up of Saint Peter\u2019s students who give manicures to senior citizens at local senior homes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This holiday season the Office of Campus Ministry also invited the University community to participate in the My Dear Friend campaign, a program in which volunteers write holiday cards to local senior citizens living in care in order to brighten their day.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Glamour Gals and Guys program was recently featured in an article in the <a id="bcbaa46508" href=\"https:\/\/www.saintpeterstribune.com\/news\/glamour-gals-provide-companionship-and-manicures-to-local-seniors\/article_a58db2e4-9ab4-11ee-9de5-ff255951d21f.html\"><i>Saint Peter\u2019s Tribune<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i> In the article, Erich Sekel, associate director of campus ministry, shared &#8220;Since my arrival in 2009, Saint Peter\u2019s has consistently developed enduring community service programs [such as Glamour Gals and Guys], emphasizing their sustainability over individual events. Half of what we do is just the fact that we show up. If you show up you&#8217;re telling somebody that they matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Joy Through Music&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>As a member of the Office of Campus Ministry, University Director of Music Joseph Hill Jr. was inspired by the work the office does for the community through the University\u2019s Campus Kitchen and the Food Pantry and Clothes Closet. \u201cI began to think that if the University is working to feed and clothe community members, it could also bring joy to them through music,\u201d he explained.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id="bcbaa46508" href=\"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Carols-scaled-e1704226863429.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/huangshizhaopin.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2024\/01\/Carols-scaled-e1704226863429-1024x541.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"317\"><\/a>He gathered a group of approximately 20 students who are members of the Aidan C. McMullen Chorale as well as volunteer students from the Office of Campus Ministry. The group visited Alaris Health in Jersey City to sing Christmas carols to the residents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe event was a great success and it was clear that many residents had not seen a live choir in some time as their faces lit up with the music,\u201d Hill explained. \u201cWe hope to continue this tradition next year and build on the program to visit additional assisted living homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, shared that \u201clove needs to express itself in deeds more than words.\u201d The Saint Peter\u2019s student volunteers are living that charge as they dedicate themselves to being good neighbors and companions to those in need such as the community\u2019s senior population.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The holiday season marks a time for loved ones to gather in community and celebration.
