The Leadership Fellows program, led by Samar Issa, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Business Administration and Director of CLS, is a selective student program aimed at developing student leaders. The program offers a rigorous academic, practical and experiential regimen designed to equip students with the leadership knowledge and skills essential for contemporary professional
success.

Consistent with the mission of the University and its Jesuit identity, the Fellows Program is guided in its work to develop leaders with a strong moral compass, broad world vision, sound ethical outlook and deep understanding of and appreciation for the diverse, global environment. As part of the program requirements, workshops on various relevant leadership topics will be offered and are open for all students to attend.

A celebratory dinner was held on August 5 th 2020 to recognize the first cohort of Saint Peter’s University Leadership Fellows. Devin Varela, a Management major from Toms River, NJ and Alexander Slawinski, a Finance major from Carteret, NJ, both 2020 graduates, were recognized. The Leadership Fellows program is a feature of the Center for Leadership Studies and involves a student regimen of academic, community service, campus events and experiential learning focused on leadership development. Successful candidates receive a distinctive stole for academic attire and a framed certificate. In lieu of the commencement activities, postponed because of the COVID 19 pandemic, a small event was held with the honorees, Center Director and Dean. Leadership Fellows event attendees included: Mary Kate Naatus, Ph.D., KPMG Dean, Frank J. Guarini School of Business; Alexander Slawinski, ’20; Finance major; Leadership Fellows recipient and Raymond Butkus, MBA; Executive Lecturer; Founding Director, Center for Leadership Studies.

Saint Peter’s Business Network and the Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership present Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop H ’14 on Wednesday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m. in The Duncan Family Sky Room on the 6th floor of the Mac Mahon Student Center.

The Honorable Steven M. Fulop H ’14 is the 49th and current mayor of Jersey City. He was elected in 2013.

Under his leadership, Jersey City became the first city in the state and the sixth city in the country, to ensure paid sick leave. Mayor Fulop has pioneered new ideas for helping prisoners re-enter society, passed legislation to protect small businesses and encouraged more to open shop and made Jersey City one of the greenest cities in the nation. He has undertaken sweeping public safety reform and has led the city to record economic development.

Prior to serving as mayor, he was councilman of Jersey City for eight years. Mayor Fulop graduated from Binghamton University in 1999 and completed both his master’s in business administration at the New York University Stern School of Business and his master’s in public administration at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in 2006. He received an honorary degree from Saint Peter’s in 2014.

Upon graduating from college, Mayor Fulop joined Goldman Sachs. After working in financial services for several years, he joined the United States Marine Corps and completed his service in 2006.

Mayor Fulop is a first-generation American, a lifelong New Jerseyan and a triathlete. His presentation will discuss leadership.

The Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership at Saint Peter’s University is a non-partisan vehicle that drives public policy discussion of some of the state’s most critical issues. Within this space, the institute hosts panel discussions with key elected officials, academics, non-profit leaders and others to discuss and debate the opportunities and challenges connected with public policies. Events are free and open to the public. The campus community and citizens across N.J. are encouraged to attend and build awareness of policies that impact our daily lives. Ten Saint Peter’s students in the School of Business, selected through a competitive application process, recently took part in the Goldman Sachs Local College Collaborative (LCC) program. LCC is a unique leadership program that brings together college students with Goldman Sachs business leaders to develop business management, teamwork and presentation skills. Participants were chosen based on a competitive application process that evalsuated academic achievement, interviews, essays, teambuilding simulations, recommendations and other criteria. This highly selective program exposes students to Goldman Sachs executives and develops business skills and involves extensive casework with actual Goldman Sachs clients.
