Warning signs: It is hard to know how someone is feeling inside, but you might see<\/em> or hear<\/em> things that could be a clue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n MYTH<\/strong>: \u201cIf I ask about suicide, and they weren\u2019t thinking it, I could put the thought in their mind.\u201d\u00a0 You can\u2019t make someone have suicidal thoughts, but you can offer the person relief by letting them talk about it.<\/p>\n How to talk to someone who is feeling suicidal:<\/strong><\/p>\n If you suspect that a family member or friend may be considering suicide, talk to them about your concerns. You can begin the conversation by expressing your concern for them, and asking questions in a non-judgmental and non-confrontational way. During the conversation:<\/p>\n Trying to solve problems, make them feel better, or draw comparisons will only shut them down, and they\u2019ll likely tell you what YOU want to hear, and not what they want to say. Encouraging them to seek help from a professional, while listening and showing support is the best way to help them. Offer to help them find a healthcare provider, make a phones call, or go with them to their first appointment.<\/p>\n Supporting someone with suicidal thoughts can be stressful not just for them but for you too. Once you help them take action and seek help, it is important for you to take some time for your own self-care or even consider talking to someone yourself.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re concerned and don\u2019t know what to do, you can get help from a crisis or suicide prevention hotline.<\/p>\n Suicide & Crisis Lifeline<\/strong> have\u00a0trained counselors available 24\/7\/365\u00a0 available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.<\/p>\n Find a Helpline https:\/\/findahelpline.com\/i\/iasp<\/a><\/p>\n This resource helps you locate domestic and international suicide and crisis hotlines. \nSuicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students. According to the American College Health Association (ACHA), the suicide rate among young adults ages 15\u201324 has tripled since the 1950s. Annually about 1,000 college students take their own lives. At Saint Peter\u2019s University we want to prevent suicide by decreasing the stigma surrounding mental health issues which is often a barrier to seeking care.<\/p>\n
