Dr. Mark DeStephano,\u00a0Chairperson<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures offers a major in Spanish. Students may, with the permission of the Department and the Academic Dean, major in Modern Languages with a concentration in Italian and\/or French.\u00a0 Minors in French and Italian are also offered. All majors and minors must achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in their major courses in order to be awarded their degree.<\/span><\/p>\n Six<\/span> of the required credits for the major may count towards the Core Curriculum Requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n May count fulfill the Core World Languages Requirement with two\u00a0Classical Civilization courses.<\/p><\/td><\/tr> May include up to\u00a05 Modern Language (ML), up to 2 Latin (LA), up to 2 Greek (GK), and\/or up to 2 Classical Civilization (CC) courses.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n \u00a0Non-native speakers should register for SP-133<\/span><\/span>\/SP-134<\/span><\/span>. Native speakers must register for SP-135<\/span><\/span>\/SP-136<\/span><\/span>.<\/p><\/td><\/tr> \u00a0Students without adequate preparation for SP-133<\/span><\/span>\/SP-134<\/span><\/span> must take SP-113<\/span><\/span>\/SP-114<\/span><\/span> first.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n Courses labeled ML (Modern Language) are interdisciplinary in scope and may be taught in English. Majors in the department may apply up to 15 credits in these courses towards their major requirements. Selected assignments will be required in the departmental student\u2019s major language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n May count towards the Core World Language Requirement<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n Students without adequate preparation for FR-133<\/span><\/span>\/FR-134<\/span><\/span> must take FR-113<\/span><\/span>\/FR-114<\/span><\/span> first.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n \u00a0May count towards the Core World Language Requirement.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n Students without adequate preparation for IT-134<\/span><\/span> must take IT-113<\/span><\/span>\/IT-114<\/span><\/span> first.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n \u00a0May count towards the Core World Language Requirement.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n Non-native speakers should register for SP-133<\/span><\/span>\/SP-134<\/span><\/span>. Native speakers must register for SP-135<\/span><\/span>\/SP-136<\/span><\/span>.<\/p><\/td><\/tr> Students without adequate preparation for SP-133<\/span><\/span>\/SP-134<\/span><\/span> must take SP-113<\/span><\/span>\/SP-114<\/span><\/span> first.<\/p><\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n Any six-credit sequence (e.g., parts I and II consecutively-in the same academic year) in one of the modern or Classical languages offered by the Department is required of all students who are Bachelor\u2019s Degree candidates. This requirement can be fulfilled in a number of ways and on a number of levels, namely:<\/span><\/p>\n All proficiency examinations have been eliminated. The external examinations accepted by the Department is the AP Examination and International Baccalaureate (Higher Level). Other than this, the language requirement must be fulfilled through coursework at Saint Peter\u2019s University.
